Adventures with Bartimaeus! (Sermon October 25, 2015)

Hello Friends!

Today is our last Sunday in our continuous reading of Mark.  This central section of Mark is where Jesus explain His mission, and it begins and ends with healing stories, specifically healing of blind men.  Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus for healing, he gets told to stay quiet, but he won’t, what happens after that is the most important part.  Take a listen!

Adventures with the Zebedee Brothers! (Sermon Oct. 18, 2015)

Hello Friends!

In today’s story, we get some more misunderstandings.  This time it is James and John the sons of Zebedee.  They ask Jesus if they can have the very best seats in heaven.  I suppose they figure that they are the best and deserve it, which, once again, misses the whole point of Jesus’ life and ministry.  Once again the disciples don’t listen, will we?

Adventures with the Spirit of the Law! (Sermon, Oct. 4, 2015)

Hello Friends!

This week’s reading seems pretty harsh at first.  Jesus declares that no one should ever get divorced.  Now that doesn’t seem like Jesus, does it?  Well, as usual, there is more going on here than it seems.  We can’t take laws from the 1st Century and plop them down in the 21st without a lot of context.  So, here we go:

Adventures with Misunderstanding (again)! (Sermon, Sept. 27, 2015)

Hello Friends!

This week we catch the disciples arguing again.  This time, not over which of them is the greatest, but how much greater they are than other people.  They just don’t understand Jesus’ message the first time around. Luckily, Jesus sets them straight again.  Take a listen:

Adventures with Fear! (Sermon, Sept. 20, 2015)

Hello Friends!

Today in Mark, we hear another passion prediction, and then the disciples argue over who is the greatest.  The disciples in Mark are not the smartest people, they rarely ask Jesus any questions out of fear.  Fear makes us do many strange things, what does fear do to our faith?

Sermon, Mark 9:30-37, Proper 20, Year B, Sept. 20, 2015

The book I reference today is, “The Rainbow Fish,” by Marcus Pfister.  It is really good, check it out.

Adventures with Taking Up Your Cross! (Sermon, Sept. 13, 2015)

Hello Friends!

This week, we continue in Mark and in this week’s story, Jesus asks the disciples who they think Jesus is.  Our good buddy Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah and is praised, but just a few verses later, Jesus scolds him and says, “Get behind me, Satan!”  Why sudden shift in tone?  Well, it is about expectations, and shattered hopes and dreams.  Take a listen:

Adventures with Gentiles! (Sermon, Sept. 6, 2015)

Hello Friends,

I apologize for the late post, the week back after vacation is a super busy one, no matter what job you have.  Anyway, this week’s story in Mark is an amazing mission changing story, it is so important to the Gospel, but in it, Jesus is a bit rude to a woman looking for help.  What is that all about?  Well, take a listen.

Adventures in Hand Washing! (Sermon, August 30, 2015)

Hello Friends,

I’m back from vacation, and it was a great one.  We had a lot of fun and relaxation, but it is good to be back too.  This week we jump back into Mark and start off with the Pharisees scolding Jesus for some of His disciples not washing their hands before they ate.  They aren’t really arguing about hand-washing, of course.  Take a listen:

Adventures in Making the Ordinary Extraordinary! (Sermon August 9, 2015)

Hello Friends!

It is our third week in the Gospel of John talking about bread, well not really bread, more like talking about who Jesus is while using bread as a metaphor.  Anyway, last week I defended the crowds a bit, and it is getting hard to do so this week.  They just keep getting more stubborn as we go along.  Anyway, take a listen to hear all about it.

Sermon, John 6:35,41-51, Proper 14, Year B, August 9, 2015

I am going on vacation for the next 2 Sundays, so I won’t be posting.  Fr. Kenny will be holding down the fort around the church, so expect some new adventures when I return.

Adventures in Questioning Jesus! (Sermon August 2, 2015)

Hello Friends!

I apologize for the late upload, it has been a hectic time.  I will be going on vacation soon (yay!) and getting everything ready before I leave is driving me a bit nuts.  Fr. Kenny has not decided whether or not he is coming with me, but if he does, expect some great pictures!

The text this week continues out journey through John 6.  The people are so confused by Jesus.  He heals them, gives them food, but then does NOT want to be the king, what is happening?  We tend to criticize the crowd for not believing right away, but maybe we are just like them…..take a listen….

Sermon, John 6:24-35, Proper 13, Year B, August 2, 2015

There will be one more sermon before vacation. Don’t miss me too much! Thanks for stopping by,

Mo. Lauren
