Adventures with Seeing is Believing! (Sermon, April 3, 2016)

Hello Friends!

Happy Easter!  (Remember that Easter is 50 days!)  Today’s story is the one about so-called Doubting Thomas.  Ah, poor Thomas, he gets a bad reputation, but if we really pay attention, we can see that he doesn’t ask for anything that his friends didn’t already get.  Also, he asks for what we all want in life, to experience God, to see and touch God.  So why is “doubting” bad?  (hint: it isn’t).  Take a listen:

Adventures with Frenzy! (Sermon, March 20, 2016)

Hello Friends,

March 20th was Palm Sunday, and we read the Passion according to Luke (Luke 22:14-23:56).  The Passion story is not just an event in the past, rather it is a mirror held up to us now.  The story shows how the few, powerful people can whip crowds into a frenzy, with disastrous results.  This is happening now in America, take a listen:

Have a blessed Holy Week everyone!

Adventures with Costly Perfume! (Sermon, March 13, 2016)

Hello Friends!

This week was the last Sunday in Lent, and we hear about Mary anointing Jesus’ feet with costly perfume.  Why does she do this?  Why does Judas get so angry?  I’ll tell ya!  Take a listen:

Text: John 12:1-8, Sermon, Lent 5, Year C, March 13, 2016

Adventures with Lostness! (Sermon, March 6, 2016)

Hello Friends!

This week’s Gospel features a very famous parable, the one where the younger son goes away and comes back, then when the father is happy, the older son gets angry.  Otherwise known as “The Parable of the Prodigal Son.”  There is a problem with giving titles to Gospel stories, and the problem is that the story changes based on who reads it.  The Bible is never read in a vacuum, so take a listen:

Adventures with Theodicy! (Sermon, Feb. 28, 2016)

Hello Friends!

In today’s Gospel (Luke 13:1-9), Jesus addresses, theodicy, which, in a nutshell, means trying to answer the eternal question of why God allows evil to exist in the world if God is all powerful.  Of course, Jesus didn’t know this term, it didn’t show up until the 1700s, but the question is the same.  The people wonder why Pilate slaughtered the Galileans that he slaughtered and why a tower fell on those specific 18 people.  They must have been horrible sinners or God would have saved them, right?  Well, Jesus says “no” to this idea.  Take a listen:

Adventures with the Fox! (Sermon Feb. 21, 2016)

Hello Friends!

This week is the 2nd Sunday in Lent, and we hear more from Luke.  Today some Pharisees warn Jesus that Herod wants Him dead.  Jesus says, “yeah, so?”  Okay, I am paraphrasing there, but Jesus does brush off the threat and calls Herod a fox.  Why is Herod scared of Jesus?  Why isn’t Jesus scared of Herod?  Check it out:

Adventures in Temptation, Luke Style! (Sermon, Feb. 14, 2016)

Hello Friends!

It has been a while, you may remember that I was on vacation or rather, stay-cation.  I got a lot done around the house and slept late, it was great!  But now I am back and it is Lent.  Lent is a great time of year, one where we pray, reflect, fast, and refocus our lives so that we can live in a more Christ centric way.

On the First Sunday in Lent, we always hear about Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, and this year we hear from Luke.  The devil tempts Jesus repeatedly, but Jesus resists.  Who do you relate to most in the story?  Jesus?  Well, take a listen and you might change your mind….

Luke 4:1-13, Sermon-Lent 1-Year C-Feb. 14, 2016

Adventures with Backlash! (Sermon, Jan. 31, 2016)

Hello Friends!

Last weekend, we had a blizzard, so most people couldn’t make it to church.  Luckily, this week’s Gospel story follows directly after last week’s, it is just one long story.  Last week, Jesus preached in his home town and everyone was happy, but….then he explained his sermon in a little more detail, and the people got angry and wanted to hurl him off a cliff.  What is the deal with that?  Take a listen:

Sermon, Luke 4:21-30, 4 Epiphany, Year C, Jan. 31, 2016

I am on vacation this week, so no sermon next Sunday.  Have a great one and thanks for stopping by!

Adventures with Sermons! (Sermon Jan. 24, 2016)

Hello Friends!

For the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany, we hear the story of Jesus’ first public act of ministry in Luke.  Unlike last week, it isn’t a miraculous event per se, rather he gives a sermon at his hometown synagogue.  REmember, that the first act of Jesus in the Gospel sets the tone for the whole story, so what it Luke all about?

A note about the sound quality.  I may sound different this week, that is because, due to a blizzard, there were only 3 people in church!  So, I am not speaking as loudly as usual.
